[뉴스부산] 서울 인사아트센터 경남갤러리에서 대한민국 무형문화재 소목장 김동귀 작가의 개인전이 오는 11일까지 열린다. 이번 전시는 나무와 색동목을 매개로 시간과 기억을 직조하는 독창적 세계를 선보이며, 전통과 현대가 교차하는 미학을 탐구한다.

작가 노트에서 김동귀는 “무엇을 제작할지보다 시간과 결을 어떻게 쌓을지를 강조한다”고 밝혔다. 달항아리, 노을, 일출 등 모티프는 끊임없이 생성되는 존재와 시간의 흐름을 시각화해 관람객을 사로잡는다.

강경호 현대미술가는 “김동귀 선생의 색동목은 한국적 정서를 품은 따뜻한 기운을 발산하며, 전통과 현대를 잇는 독창적 K-컬처의 통로가 될 것”이라 평했다. 이는 전통이 현대와 교감할 때 더 큰 빛을 발한다는 그의 견해와 맞닿아 있다.

김동귀는 국내외 전시와 대통령 표창을 통해 한국 공예의 세계적 위상을 높였으며, 대한민국미술대전 초대작가 및 심사위원으로 활동하며 공예 발전에 기여했다. 또한 저서와 9건의 특허를 통해 학문적·기술적 기반을 확립했다.

오랜 연구와 창작이 응축된 이번 전시가 전통과 현대가 공존하는 새로운 미학의 장을 열 것으로 기대된다.

- Insa Art Center Gyeongnam Gallery… An Aesthetic Woven by Tradition and Modernity

The solo exhibition of Kim Donggwi, Master Carpenter and holder of the title Important Intangible Cultural Property of the Republic of Korea, is being held at the Gyeongnam Gallery, Insa Art Center, Seoul, until May 11. The exhibition presents a unique world woven through wood and saekdongmok (colored wood), exploring an aesthetic where tradition and modernity intersect.

In his artist’s note, Kim emphasizes the process: “Rather than what to create, it is about how to layer time and grain.” Motifs such as the Moon Jar, sunset, and sunrise visualize the ceaseless flow of existence and time, captivating visitors.

Contemporary Artist (ADFA Artist), remarked that 'Kim Dong-gwi’s Saekdongmok radiates a warm energy imbued with Korean sentiment, becoming an original conduit of K-Culture that bridges tradition and modernity.' This reflects his belief that tradition shines more brightly when it resonates with the contemporary.

Kim has elevated the global stature of Korean craft through domestic and international exhibitions and recognition including a Presidential Commendation. He has also contributed to the advancement of craft as an invited artist and juror at the Grand Art Exhibition of Korea. Furthermore, his publications and nine patents have established both academic and technical foundations for his practice.

This exhibition, condensing decades of research and creation, is expected to open a new aesthetic realm where tradition and modernity coexist.
